Brother James Elmo Pendergrass

 -1937-

A master's job is never done, it lives on through the ages.

Installation was held on a Friday night, and a good time was had by all. Musical selections were interlaced through the ceremony and was followed by refreshments and dancing.

In the January stated meeting a motion was made and carried to allow payment to a convalescent home, to pay the care of a Brother who was in their care, it was paid promptly when received. It was also carried by motion and vote to allow the Organist, Bro. E. Kenneaster to have his dues paid for his musical services to the Lodge.

In February, it was ordered by the Brethren, to instruct the Secretary to have more places for the Brethren to hang their coats in the ante room. (Today we are lucky if the Secretary comes out of his office...:) Just kidding Bob!) Also Bro. R. E. Matthews was elected to a committee of one to ensure that the new candidates were instructed on what all Masonry does. After Lodge cards and refreshments finished out the evening.

Discussion was had about the Lodge getting a telephone and although it doesn't show in the minutes that any action was taken we see in the future months that they were paying a monthly bill of about $2.00 to the telephone company.

In April there was discussion about giving the members a lapel pin after they gave there third degree proficiency, but there again there was no action taken. In May there was talk about entertainment, and the Master stated that there was going to be a card party and a "smoker" for the members and prospective members. (Now this is getting to be my kind of Lodge!!) In June there was mention of endorsing a program for the 150th anniversary of the Constitution of the United States.

The passing of two of Clovis Lodge's earliest members in July were felt for months. Bros. Blanchard, and L. W. Gibson PM and charter member, left this world and both were sorely missed. It was said that they were, "efficient officers and the Lodge had lost true and beloved Brothers."

In September there was mention of a "venison dinner" to be enjoyed with the Eastern Star,( no wonder they are still mad at us!!! hehehe) An annual roll call dinner was mentioned in October to be held in December, a tradition still in use by Clovis Lodge today.

In November there was mention of a Christmas party just like last years for the children of the community. The Lodge voted to act with the Fresno Bee and put on a party for the less fortunate children of the community.

Bro. Jim passed away at his home in Clovis on December 16, 1952. He will long be remembered for his kind disposition and the great service he has rendered to this community in his profession, in his civic duties and his religious advancement of his church, and to his adherence to the principle tenants of Masonry.
